Understand the Hair Growth Cycle

How Does Hair Grow?

Hair is made up of 2 parts: the follicle and the shaft.

The follicle anchors the hair into the scalp and is made up of the papilla and bulb, which are located beneath the scalp.

The shaft is the part of your hair that can be seen above your scalp. It’s made of protein called keratin compacted and fused together. Keratin is the same material that nails, hoofs, feathers and claws are composed of. Keratin is a remarkably strong protein, very resistant to wear and tear. It is held together by two kinds of bonds: disulphide bonds and hydrogen bonds.

The Hair Growth Cycle

It is normal to lose up to 100 hairs and grows about 0.3mm to 0.4mm a day, which adds up to around six inches per year. Every hair is at a different stage.

There are 3 stages of hair growth in the cycle: anagen, categen, telogen. At some point, the follicle will begin to grow again, softening the anchor point of the shaft initially, the hair base will break free from the root, and the hair will be shed.

Anagen

Anagen (growth phase) is the active phase of the hair. During the anagen phase, cells of the bulb divide rapidly,

Most hair is growing at any given time, and each hair spends 2-8years in this phase.

Catagen

Catagen (transitional phase) is a transitional stage and about 3 % of all hairs are in this phase at any time. Hair growth slows and the hair follicle shrinks.

Telogen

During the Telogen (resting phase), the follicle remains dormant for 1 to 4 months. 10-15% of the hair on one’s head are in this phase of growth at any time, and as much as 50-100 hairs can be shed during this time.

While the old hair is resting, the new hair begins and goes back the growth phase.

Hair Loss & Hair Growth Cycle

Hair shedding is a natural and necessary part of the hair growth cycle, but excessive hair shedding can occur for a variety of reasons (for example: Alopecai areata). When these hairs fall out, hair appears thin. Hair growth cycle will be interfered and hair follicles in anagen phase are prematurely entered to telogen phase. There are other hair loss types: traction alopecia (adding too much strain on the hair on your head); telegen effluvium (70 % of the anagen hairs is precipitated into telogen, which is unusual ratio) and so on.
