Hair Loss in Pregnancy & Childbirth

According to Pregnancy Birth and Baby, many new moms see noticeable hair loss a few months after having a baby-dermatologists refer to this condition as excessive hair shedding, which is caused by falling estrogen levels. Hormones, stress or medical conditions may occur during or after pregnancy.

What cause hair loss during pregnancy & childbirth?

During pregnancy, the flood of estrogen levels is rising higher to support baby, and the natural cycle of hair follicle is shedding. As a result, some women may lose fewer hair after the baby comes. It would take up to 2 years for your locks to return to normal.

  • Hormonal Shifts- As hormones change to accommodate the developing baby, generally in four months postpartum.

  • Thyroid Problems- Too much or too little thyroid hormone will affect 2 or 3 out of 100 pregnant women, especially hyperthyroidism. The symptom includes hair loss, muscle cramps, constipation and exhaustion.

  • Iron Deficiency- Low iron is another common cause of hair loss during pregnancy. When your blood supply surges to deliver blood and oxygen to the baby, iron deficiency anemia may occur easier. Low iron levels mean that there’s no enough red blood cells to efficiently carry oxygen through your body, so it’s better to address your iron levels, especially in pregnancy or period time.

Other reasons may be like gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, hyperemesis gravidarum, vitamin deficiencies.

How to Prevent Hair Loss in Pregnancy

The treatment or prevention depends on the cause of your hair loss. Taking healthy tips helps your pregnancy and postpartum process.

Eat healthy, balanced diet, and have enough nutrients (protein, iron, vitamins and others you need)

Do not tie your hair tightly or have braids, buns, ponytails hairstyles, as they may pull at your hair and cause stress on your mane.

Avoid harsh treatment treatments like using hot rollers, curling irons or hot oils.

Asking your doctor about hair loss medicine or supplements.

Hair loss during pregnancy is normal and doesn’t indicate a major problem, and hair will regrow within a few months or treat the underlying issue. Most mamas say their locks feel back to normal by their baby’s 9-month milestone month or first birthday.
