Two thirds of American men will experience some degree of hair loss by the age of 35, and approximately 85% of men will have significantly thinning hair by the age of 50. For women, there are approximately 30–60% of women above the age of 70 are affected.

What Cause Hair Loss?

The most common type of hair loss is male/female pattern hair loss, and it’s caused by the interaction between a certain type of hormone called androgens. The hair follicles in individuals who are genetically susceptible.

Male pattern hair loss is an inherited predisposition and may come from either side of the family. The male hormone testosterone combined with genetic susceptibility are the primary factors and the condition is also known as androgenic alopecia or male/female pattern baldness. Chronic hair loss in men begins above the temples and progresses to a well-defined pattern in the crown and forehead. Female hair loss may also be influenced by genetics, hormonal changes and menopause as well as stress and medical conditions. Chronic hair loss in women is characterized by diffused, gradual thinning of the hair more often than pattern baldness.

Hair Growth Cycle

There are 3 stages of hair growth in the cycle: anagen, categen, telogen. At some point, the follicle will begin to grow again, softening the anchor point of the shaft initially, the hair base will break free from the root, and the hair will be shed.

1. Anagen

Anagen (growth phase) is the active phase of the hair. During the anagen phase, cells of the bulb divide rapidly. Most hair is growing at any given time, and each hair spends 2-8years in this phase.

Factors such as chemotherapy, oral contraceptives, chronic infections, and other chemicals can lead to an irregular halt to the anagen phase. This results in hair shedding within this phase and a condition known as anagen effluvium, but people with this condition will typically begin to have natural hair regrowth after a few months.

2. Catagen

Catagen (transitional phase) is a transitional stage and about 3 % of all hairs are in this phase at any time. Hair growth slows and the hair follicle shrinks.

3. Telogen

During the Telogen (resting phase), the follicle remains dormant for 1 to 4 months. 10-15% of the hair on one’s head are in this phase of growth at any time, and as much as 50-100 hairs can be shed during this time. While the old hair is resting, the new hair begins and goes back the growth phase.

How To Resolve It?

It’s important to keep track of experiencing excessive shedding, which can happen for a range of reasons. The most common types of hair loss occur when more follicles than the normal transition from the anagen phase to the catagen phase. By the time those hairs reach the exogen phase and fall out, hair becomes weaker.

Improving the anagen phase maximizing the anagen phase by controlling certain factors can help moderate extra shedding. Like get enough sleep, reduce stress levels, exercise, avoid crash diets and cleanses, stay hydrated and eat a healthy diet.

You can also use helpful treatment like Laser Cap, which has been researched heavily and clinically FDA approved.
